Updating Site Signage for SUEZ in Weston-super-Mare

Not every signage project requires everything to be removed and started again.

Following a site survey at the SUEZ offices in Weston-super-Mare, we were asked to update the existing directional and parking signage to reflect changes to the way visitors, staff and deliveries move around the site.

Some signs needed new information, others simply needed cleaning, and a few new panels and posts were required to make the updated arrangements clearer. It was a relatively small project, but one that made a practical difference to how easily people can find their way around the site.

Starting with a site survey

I completed the initial signage survey myself while travelling through the area. Site visits are incredibly useful for projects like this. Photographs and measurements provide part of the information, but physically walking the route gives you a much better understanding of what drivers and visitors see as they approach the building. It also allowed us to identify which signs could be retained and updated, rather than automatically replacing everything.

The existing signs were still structurally sound, although several had become a little green from the surrounding trees and planting. These were thoroughly cleaned before any new graphics or panels were installed.

Updating existing signs

Where the existing sign structures could be reused, we updated them with new printed overlays or replacement panels. This allowed the revised parking and delivery information to be introduced without unnecessarily replacing posts and sign systems that were still perfectly serviceable.

The work included new visitor parking information, updated delivery directions and replacement panels for existing post-mounted signs. We also manufactured and installed a completely new post-and-panel directional sign guiding visitors towards reception.

Keeping and updating what was already in place reduced disruption on site and produced a consistent result without creating unnecessary waste.

Clearer visitor, parking and delivery directions

Commercial site signage needs to do a fairly simple job: help people reach the right place without confusion. Changes to parking areas, entrances or delivery arrangements can quickly make existing signs inaccurate, even when the signs themselves are still in good condition.

By combining replacement panels, vinyl overlays and one new directional sign, we were able to bring the complete system up to date while maintaining the established SUEZ branding across the site. Our installer completed the work in around half a day, helped by some unusually lovely weather, and sent back a really good set of finished photographs.

A visit that went beyond the signage

One of the best parts of doing the original survey was meeting Caroline and seeing the changes she had made inside the building. The offices had been transformed into open, welcoming working spaces, with many of the furnishings and items sourced through SUEZ’s re-use operation in Greater Manchester.

It fitted perfectly with the company’s wider approach to keeping useful products and materials in circulation. SUEZ describes the Renew Hub as a large-scale project where pre-owned items are repaired, renewed and given another life, rather than being discarded. I've previously visited the Manchester operation myself and was completely wowed by the scale of it, so it was great to see that thinking being carried through into another SUEZ workplace.

It is one of the reasons I enjoy site visits so much. You arrive to look at signs and often come away having seen something interesting, met good people and learned more about how the organisation works.
