Permit-to-Work Control Boards for High-Risk Industrial Environments

When you’re managing confined space work during a shutdown, clarity isn’t optional.

SUEZ needed 85 confined space boards for use across one of their operational sites. These boards form part of their permit-to-work system, a simple visual control that shows exactly who is inside a confined space at any given time. In practice, they function as permit-to-work safety boards, giving supervisors and teams instant visibility in high-risk areas.

During shutdowns, when pipework, ducting, chimneys and other plant areas are being cleaned or maintained, multiple teams can be working across different locations. Each operative places their T-card into the board when they enter a confined space and removes it when they leave.

It’s straightforward… but it has to work.

Applying graphics to durable boards

Manufacturing Durable Confined Space Safety Boards

These aren’t lightweight office noticeboards. They’re purpose-built industrial confined space signage, designed for live operational environments where equipment gets handled regularly and needs to stay legible.

We manufactured all 85 boards from high-quality composite sheet, chosen for its strength and long-term stability on site. The graphics were digitally printed and then finished with a dry-wipe laminate so the boards can be written on and cleaned down repeatedly without damaging the print underneath.

Each board was different, clearly labelled for specific locations around the plant.

To avoid damage in transit, we didn’t fully assemble the boards before shipping. Instead, we applied 3M VHB tape to the T-card holders and leaflet holders in advance, and built placeholder markers directly into the printed design. This means the client can position and fix the components accurately on site, without guesswork, while reducing the risk of parts being knocked or broken during transport.

It’s a small detail, but it makes delivery smoother and installation easier.

Built for Repeated Use During Shutdown Periods

Shutdowns are busy; there’s pressure to get work completed safely and efficiently, often within tight timeframes.

These confined space boards are designed to make that process clearer. They keep permit visibility obvious. They stay rigid, they remain legible and because of the dry-wipe surface, they can be reused time and time again without the boards starting to look tired or worn.

It’s not complicated, it’s just about using the right materials and building them properly in the first place.

Packed, Palletised and Delivered to Site

Once completed, the 85 boards were carefully packaged and shipped on a pallet directly to site, ready for final assembly and installation.
