Effective Vehicle Graphics Start with the Asking Right Questions

An exhibition vehicle wrapped in graphics
A design we created for a mobile exhibition teaching people about the the dangers of illegal tobacco - this vehicle is parked up most of the time - so plenty of time to read the information contained in the design.

If you caught our earlier post; Build Me a House you’ll know where this is heading!

And if you’ve read our Vehicle Graphics Series, you’ll already have seen a theme running through them all: good design doesn’t start with software, it starts with conversation. We don’t just design, we diagnose. Every business and every brief is different.

So, before we talk vinyl, colours, or coverage, we start with the most important part: the questions!

Why We Ask (So Many) Questions

We once had a builder come in and say, “Just design me something. I want my van wrapped.”Sounds simple… until you realise “something” could mean literally anything.

We asked about his customers, colours, what he wanted on the van, who he was targeting but he approached it with the same type of repsonses: “You’re the designer, you figure it out.”

That’s when we said, “Right, build us a house.”

He blinked. “What kind of house?”

We shrugged. “Don’t know, just something nice and modern.”

He got it straight away. You can’t build a house (or design van graphics - or anything else for that matter!) without a plan. That’s why we ask, because every answer helps us design something that fits you and your business... effective vehicle graphics start with the asking right questions

The Questions That Shape a Great Design

When we start a new vehicle graphics project, these are the things we’ll ask. They’re not random, they’re what turn a van wrap into a proper piece of marketing.

About Your Business

  • What do you do, and who are your customers?

  • What makes you different from your competitors?

  • What’s the one message you want people to remember?

About Your Vehicle

  • What make and model is it?

  • Full wrap, half wrap, or cut graphics?

  • Where’s it usually parked?

    • Outside customers’ homes

    • On industrial sites

    • Mostly on the move

If it’s parked up all day, we can include more detail. If it’s always on the road, bold and simple works best.

About the Design

  • Do you already have a logo and colours?

  • What info must be included; services, contact, web?

  • Any designs you’ve seen that you love or hate?

  • What kind of feel do you want; bold, clean, or playful?

About the Audience

  • Who do you want to notice your van?

  • Are they homeowners, trade, or business clients?

  • What should they think when they see it?

The Practical Bits

  • What’s your timescale?

  • What’s your budget range?

  • Where will fitting take place?

The Right Design Starts with a Good Brief

If you’ve read our Vehicle Graphics Series, you’ll already know that: Not every van needs a full wrap, good design depends on how you use your vehicle and the best results come from a clear plan.

That’s why we ask the questions we do, not to make life difficult, but to make sure your design works in the real world and not just on a Mac screen.
